In Ontario, most insurance companies provide coverage options for counselling services provided by Registered Social Workers (RSWs). Each employer negotiates with their insurer to select the specific services included in their employee benefits plan. It’s best to check with your insurance prior to booking a session to confirm your coverage for sessions. Our therapists will provide you with an invoice with all the necessary details you need to submit your claim.
Confidentiality refers to the obligation of the therapist to keep the information disclosed by the client during therapy sessions private and confidential. This means that the therapist cannot disclose any information about the client without the client's consent.
It is important to understand that there are limits to confidentiality. The therapist may be required by law to disclose certain information, such as disclosure/reports of abuse or neglect of children under the age of 16 (this can extend to individuals up to the age of 18 depending on the nature of the report), if the client poses a risk of harm to themselves or others, or if the therapist is ordered by a court to testify in a legal proceeding.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) are two forms of psychotherapy or “talk therapy.” In both, you work with a mental health professional to gain insight into your personal challenges and develop strategies to independently cope with these challenges.
CBT focuses on the connection between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This type of therapy helps individuals recognize and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress and maladaptive behaviours. Through CBT, individuals will learn new skills and coping strategies to challenge their thoughts, which can in turn lead to improvements in their emotional well-being and behaviour.
DBT focuses on skill development in: mindfulness; emotion regulation; distress tolerance; and, interpersonal effectiveness. Mindfulness skills help individuals be able to focus on the present moment. Emotion regulation skills help individuals be able to manage overwhelming and intense emotions in a healthy way. Distress tolerance skills help individuals learn how to cope /manage crises and challenging situations. And, interpersonal effectiveness skills help individuals improve their communication and relationships with others.
